"Durable brass plating - titanium process developed by NASA"

1998

I would like information on titanium plate finish combined over or with traditional brass plating. I believe the technology was developed by NASA and the bathroom fixture manufacturers such as Moen are using this process to make their brass plating over nickel or chrome last a lifetime.

We have a customer who is requesting this process.

It's a physical vapor deposition process, not an electroplating process, and is used by Moen and Delta Faucet, and possibly others. It's probably titanium nitride, but may include other materials for the exact right color. But R&D went into it I'm sure, so I don't think you will find it easy to duplicate, and I don't think you'll find Moen or Delta Faucet to be very forthcoming about the fine details.

George,

PVD processes are used by the plumbing fixture companies to give a gold finish (TiN) or a brass finish (ZrN) or many other decorative and wear resistant coatings using carbonitrides. To set up to do the coating work will require a fairly large capital investment. There are a number of contract coaters who will do small numbers of parts for you.
