Where to Buy Zinc Sheet

Q. I am looking for a source where I can purchase zinc sheet on eBay or Amazon [affil link] . I wish to do some furniture panels and want that 'dead gray' color that oxidized zinc has. Any information about oxidizing the zinc would be helpful also.

Q. I have also seen this product used as a fireplace surround and was thinking of using it as well depending on price and availability.

Q. I am looking for a small piece of zinc for a project which would resemble a piece of very thin sheet metal (maybe 18 gauge or similar). Is anything available in this form. If so, would it be malleable or brittle. Or, are there any alloys with a high zinc content available which would be somewhat malleable.

A. Tony,

I don't know what you really need for your project, or how much, but standard 1-1/2 volt flashlight batteries from AAA through D, and even 'lantern' size are made of quite malleable, quite pure, zinc. Make sure it's a standard 'cheapo' carbon-zinc battery, not a rechargeable or an alkaline energizer.

Carefully cut it apart. The center rod is carbon, the shell is zinc sheet, and the wet black glop between them is a who-knows-what conductive salt, so flush it without getting any on your eyes or skin.

RFQ: I too want some sheet zinc. I need a few square feet, perhaps 0.020 to.040 inches thick. There must be someone who has some. Please contact me. Ed Boyle

Ed. note: This RFQ is outdated, but technical replies are welcome, and readers are encouraged to post their own RFQs. But no public commercial suggestions please ( huh? why?).

A. Hi, Edward. Readers have offered a few sources in topic 24550. Good luck with it.

Multiple threads merged: please forgive chronology errors and repetition  🙂

Q. I need to find a pure zinc sheet on eBay or Amazon [affil link] with thickness measured in millimeters(e.g.1~5 mm) for my project. I don't care about the size since I will finally cut it into a piece of about 60 mm X 120 mm.

A. Hi, Jimmy. Maybe the skin of a regular 1-1/2 volt D cell carbon-zinc battery will do it. If not, readers have suggested some sources for zinc sheet in thread 24550. Good luck with the project.
