Paint kitchen island range hood copper color

Q. Our kitchen is 30 years old. We are getting granite countertops, back splash & under-counter lights We would like to paint the metal range hood over the island. It is almond color. We would like to "paint" it a copper color. Please give us any suggestions. Thanks

A. Hi, Ann.

You will get better adhesion to that almond paint than to bare metal, so don't remove it. Scrub it with something like Spic and Span [affil links].
because it will be oily even if you've previously tried hard to keep it clean, then very lightly sand it to give it a bit of tooth. Paint isn't copper plating and won't look as good as copper plating no matter how well you do it, but a brush-on copper paint that claims to look like "hammered" copper will probably be best. These have some sort of dispersing agent that makes the metal flakes form rings and islands for a more realistic (to me) look than the flat paints.

Q. Hammered copper paint sounds intriguing, I'd love to do a comparison! Where can I find "Hammered Copper Paint"?!
