Is hot dip galvanizing RoHS compliant, REALLY?

Can hot dip galvanizing really be considered ROHS compliant without including the weight of the substrate in the calculations?

Hi, Mike If it's not lead free I tend to doubt it.

The electroplating industry has always believed that the substrate and the coating are not a homogeneous material and the plating weight by itself needs to comply with RoHS standards, which always necessitates trivalent chromate conversion coating. In the early days of RoHS (2006) the galvanizing industry did not share that opinion and seemed to feel that hexavalent chromate was okay. See letters 39879 and 38636.
