Q. I am a private person from North Macedonia, I am interested to start a new galvanizing plant here.
Is it possible to provide me any idea or any plan about investing budget and what is building time up to start working.

Faruk Aliu

A. Hi Faruk
For a first-cut very rough estimate, Geoff Crowley, Thomas Cook, and John Malone have already given you their guesses.

If you know how big a kettle you want, or how much work will be processed, etc., a closer guess might be forthcoming.

Luck & Regards,

A. The question is not well enough defined to be able to give any meaningful answer.
It is like asking. "I want to purchase a vehicle, what will it cost?"

You will need to consider the market available, and from that assess the size of the plant, the level of automation, the amount of customisation for local materials costs, energy sources, etc.
Time to build could vary from 3 months to 3 years depending on these factors.
Cost could vary from USD 1m to 50m, depending on these factors.

A. Hi, Yusufali. We've linked to a few good galvanizing books here, but it's an awfully broad subject, and you may be interested in talking to a supplier of galvanizing equipment or a galvanizing consultant to get you started. Good luck with it!

· Machining services

To undertake the above activities, the company has invested in the required machineries for steel construction, manufacturing, assembly, and electro-mechanical works, surface treatment, apart from the assembly lines for cargo and tanker bodies, trucks and crusher as well as a mega rolling plant for the manufacturing of tanks. The workshop is further supported with design and material and products testing facilities. We manufacture various equipment and components for the industrial, transport, construction, agriculture and other sectors. The industrial complex lies-over 250,000m2 premises 35,000m2 of which is covered area. Currently, it employs more than 450 workers

With an aim to be competitive for the local market and export market we decided to own Hot Dip Galvanization Plant as per the following specification

Specification of our requirements:
The plant shall have the following:

Surface preparation
Prefluxing
Galvanizing
Finishing

We would like to galvanize according to the specification and practices contained in ASTM standards --
ASTM A123,
ASTM A143,
ASTM A153 ,
ASTM A384,
ASTM A385,
ASTM A780

CAPACITY:
As Option 1, with 5000 ton/ two shift/year (16 hours/day)
Option 2, with 10,000ton/two shift/year ( 16 hours/day)
Option 3, with 15,000ton/two shift/year (16 hrs/day)
Maximum length of product to be galvanized: 7000 mm

Heating system shall be with furnace oil Local environmental demands exhaust system for zinc vapor from kettle and acid vapor from pickling, and waste disposal such as waste acid and iron sludge The plant shall have a future for future expansion to increase out put of the plant by 25-50% Training and know-how transfer Erection and commissioning please include required consumables to run the plant for a period of three months.

Our plan for implementation is to commission and erect the plant before February 2005. Based on the above, please send us your best proposal. Looking forward to your reply, I remain

A. I'd suggest contacting one of these organisations as it's not possible to give the detailed information you require in a forum like this.

www.hdgasa.org.za/ (hot dip galvanizers association of South Africa)

A. This question is too vague to be answered here. It would take a book! Don't think this is the right forum for that question.

112 m2 available for what? That seems too small for even a model of a plant.

A. Hello Stiaan. I suspect that you surely must mean 112 m x 112 m :-)

That should be enough.

Cost to open a hot dip galvanizing business?

Q. Hi Everybody
I would like to open a small hot dip galvanizing shop in North America. How much start up money do I need in order to have something competitive and contemporary? What are the factors and or any restrictions to keep in mind? Please advise!
Thank You

A. This question is easier to answer ...

"I'd like to buy a car. How much will it cost?"

What sort? What size? Where? What quality? What energy supply? etc, etc.

But risking being argued off the page for making a huge number of assumptions, $CAN 8 million.

A. Sir,
About 10 to 20 years ago I estimated that a galvanizing plant costs about $100,000/foot of kettle length. Thus a 40 foot long kettle (the entire plant) would cost about $4,000,000. With inflation this is likely to be about $8,000,000+ today. Also kettles and all tanks are much deeper now than 10 to 20 years ago so $8,000,000 plus $2,000,000 = $10,000,000 may be more realistic. Actually far more important is the available market in the area that you would build. Thus I have estimated that you need about 1,000,000 pounds of steel for every foot of kettle length to make a decent profit. Thus for a 40 foot kettle you need at least 40,000,000 pounds of steel each year. There are a few places in the world where prices for galvanizing are high (islands, and high steel transport prices where a smaller amount of product could give a profit).

Regards,

A. Based on almost 50 years of experience I would estimate the cost of constructing a new energy efficient (and environmentally friendly) hot dip galvanizing plant is $190,000 to $220,000 USD per LF of kettle ... PLUS cost of land, startup chemicals, and zinc.
