Silver ring turned black

I put my husbands silver ring in a cleaning substance which had water as a solution and with in seconds his ring turn pitch black, can you tell me what happened? He bought this ring a year and a half ago in Iraq when he was overseas. Please help!

Whatever was in the cleaning solution caused the silver to rapidly tarnish. The aluminum foil and washing soda ⇦ on eBay or Amazon [affil link] approach suggested in numerous letters here, including letter 4785, should work.
