Difference between Electro-galvanized and Galvanneal

Q. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS?

DeAnn McMeekin

A. Hi DeAnn. Electrogalvanized means zinc electroplated. Galvanneal means galvanizing followed by an annealing/diffusion process which renders the surface more suitable to painting. If you explain the context behind your question, a more complete and satisfying answer can probably be offered.

Q. Hello,

Which one of the two types is more convenient for powder coating? Thank you.

A. Hi Nasser. The annealing process supposedly diffuses iron from the base steel into the zinc of the galvanizing, reputedly leaving an alloy surface that is less problematic for the application of paint or powder coating. Pretreatment, generally with phosphatizing, is still required. My understanding is that the most corrosion-prone areas of automobiles like rocker panels and fenders are made of galvanneal material.

Q. How does Electrogalvanized Alloy differ from Electrogalvanized or HGalvanneal

A. Hi. An alloy is simply a metal made of two or more different elements, 'Electrogalvanized Alloy' is not a specification, it's just slang, so it would not actually mean anything different than 'Electrogalvanized', except possibly in some specific context. Why do you ask? I think "HGalvanneal" was just a typo, but whether the typo was by you, or whether you are inquiring about a typo by someone else isn't clear. I am pretty confident there is no such thing.
