Plating/coating thickness gauges/testers: Q&A's

Q. What are the best suitable inspection methods used for zinc coating thickness of approx. 10 microns? Mention their merits and demerits?

V.ARIVAZHAGAN

A. Mr Arivazhagan,

Use a thickness tester based on either beta backscatter OR magnetic principle.

Both are reasonably dependable methods. Beta backscatter is more accurate.

Other methods also work but the equipment is not cheap.

Consider the coulometric principle which is accurate but qualifies as destructive while the other two are Non Destructive.

A. Hi arivalaganji,

There is an instrument of Magnetic type.

With that instrument you can also check powder coating, Painting thickness.

It is costing around 30000-/-.

Disposing of a used X-ray thickness tester

Q. We have an old Fischer XUVM X-ray thickness tester that the proportional counter went bad on, however, the unit was a workhorse and in working condition before this component failed. We've upgraded to a new X-ray so this is destined for disposal; however, what have others done with old units? Is there any use for this as parts? If anyone out there is interested in it for parts and would be willing to pay for the freight, it's available. I hate to see a possibly useful item disposed of.
