Electroless Deposition on Graphite Powder

Q. Respected Sir,

I am a mechanical engineer. As part of my research, I am developing metal matrix composite (MMC) of Aluminium and Graphite.

I will add Graphite powder to molten aluminium and later on do its mechanical testing. The main problem is the poor wetting of graphite powder with aluminium. It is a well established fact that Copper or Nickel wets aluminium. So the graphite powder will be coated with Nickel or Copper, either one of them.

I will do the electroless deposition of copper or nickel on the graphite powder.

So, Do I have to sensitize and activate the graphite powder with stannous chloride and palladium chloride solution first and then later on do the electroless deposition of nickel or copper.

Can the same method of coating can be done on Silicon Carbide powder. Is the method correct.

Please guide me.

Q. Respected Sir,

I am a researcher.I want to provided coating of copper on graphite powder. What is the procedure.

Thanking you,

A. Joshi,

You can sensitize ceramic or graphite powders with stannous chloride and activate them with palladium chloride solution and then later on do the electroless deposition of nickel or copper using any suitable electroless plating bath - copper or nickel.

Electroless plating of the ceramic powders will certainly improves the wetting of the powders and enables an effective method for preparing metal matrix composites.

A. Dear Joshi,

There is a very simple procedure for sensitizing and activating graphite powders. You need not follow the SnCl2, PdCl2 route.

Just heat the graphite powders in air at 380° C for about 1 hr. This will expose a fresh surface, which is amenable for electroless plating without any further chemical treatment.

Q. Sir I want to do electroless deposition of Ni-Co-P and prepare a mathematical model of it can you help me or tell me from where I can get data.
Thank You,

M. Shahzad, the two best books on electroless plating are arguably "Electroless Plating - Fundamentals & Applications", by Mallory & Hajdu [on eBay , Amazon, or AbeBooks affil links] and Chemical (Electroless) Nickel Plating, by G.G. Gawrilov.

Q. Respected Sir,

I am a Ph.D student. As part of my research, I am developing metal matrix composite (MMC) of Aluminium and Graphite.

I will do the electroless deposition of copper or nickel on the graphite powder.

So, I activate graphite at 385° C; I prepared the bath as I found in the article of F.Z. Kong 2001, my problem is: the nickel was not deposed in graphite. Can anyone helps me please?

Thank you.

A. Hi, Najla.

Can you briefly summarize the method of "F.Z. Kong 2001"?
