Salt Spray Fog Testing Equipment for ASTM B 117 and DIN 50 021

Q. I would like to know if there is a difference between the Salt Spray Fog Testing equipments required for testing as per standardsASTM B117 ( USA) and DIN 50021 (Germany) as I intend to buy a Salt Spray Tester but am not sure as to which specification I must specify for the same. Are they both the same standards of different countries and can the same test equipment be used for both of them or shall I need a separate tester individually for each ? Can you advise me of a suitable company that offers these?

Thank you,

A. I am familiar with ASTM B117 spec but not the German spec you referenced. The companies that sell salt fog equipment should be able to tell you if their equipment complies with the German spec; I know that it complies with B117.

A. I have not seen DIN 50021 recently, but in the past there was no difference between the two tests. The equipment manufacturers should provide you with a statement indicating to which specifications their equipment complies.

A. DIN 50021 SS is the neutral salt mist test and DIN 50021 ESS is the acidic salt mist test. In SS the salt water is held to pH 6.5-7.2 whereas EES has pH range 3.1-3.3. B117 holds pH to range 6.5-7.2. The concentration of salt in solution is approximately equivalent. B117 calls for 5% ± 1% and 50021 calls for 50 grams/liter. These two work out to approximately equal. Also, both chamber temperatures are called to be 35 °C. So the tests are quite similar with the exception of the EES variant.

This info comes from pooled info from searching the internet. I own a copy of the ASTM B117 but not for DIN 50021. The info above is accurate but may not be totally inclusive, that is, I may have missed something. Anything I did miss was not easily findable on the internet.

You should be able to purchase the two similar specs and run the test to either standard because you will control the chamber temperature etc.. You can even run it to the EES variant. Hope this helps :P

A.
1. Salt spray test (neutral)
- Resistance against salt water spray in accordance to SS DIN 50021 and ASTM B117.
- Test samples are exposed to a spray of a 5% salt solution at 35 °C.
- The test samples are checked for blistering, detachment and any other defects.
2. Salt spray test (acid)
- Resistance against salt water spray by means of an acid salt spray test according to ESS DIN 50021 and ASTM B287 (or ASTM G85 annex A1)
- Test samples are exposed to a spray of a 5% salt solution with a pH of 3 (The pH is set with acetic acid [on eBay or Amazon]), at 35 °C.
- The test samples are checked for blistering, detachment and any other defects.
