Ed. note: This RFQ is outdated, but technical replies are welcome, and readers are encouraged to post their own RFQs. But no public commercial suggestions please ( huh? why?).

Dave,

Aluminum is not commonly plated onto other metals. I think you need to look into vapor deposition, sputtering or evaporation.

I think there is only one place, Dave: Alumiplate (formerly called New Materials Corp.) in Coon Rapids, MN.

Aluminum is electroplated from a molten salt, AlF3+NaF is one combination. Virgin Al is won out by this method. in the 1980's McDonnell Douglas marketed a process under the "Ivadizer." Primary use was for Naval Aviation rework-maintenance. My only known installation of this process was the Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda, CA...now "defunded." Are there any ex-or-current military people out there who know of a process being privatized?

Dave,

Alumiplate technology is not molten salt and may be a technology that you are not yet aware of.

Also, Ivadizing is still viable if that is what you are looking for. But it's now Abar-Ipsen, Bensalem, PA, rather than McDonnell-Douglas. There are Ivadizers in commercial jobshops, and I assume Abar-Ipsen can locate them for you.

Thanks, I am in contact with Alumiplate. I am seeking several process types as well due to the difficulties associated with my unusual base material. Ultimate end use of the device is a low temp radiant heater for wafer processing. We need the blackbody characteristics of anodized aluminum, therefore after coating with aluminum, we will anodize as well. The coating must also be contaminant free- as outgassing of contaminants at temperature under vacuum will foul the wafers. So we will be evaluating a variety of coating technologies on the basis of optimization of all these requirements.

To the best of my knowledge, the three commercial shops that are capable of the IVD process in the U.S. are Titanium Finishing Co. of PA, Embee and AAA of CA.
