Reaction between tin and nitric acid

February 26, 2014

Q. Hi,
I would like to know the interaction of pure tin and concentrated nitric acid. I have a decent knowledge of metallurgy. But I am not that familiar with chemistry. Can you advise me.

Raymond McCabe

Ed. note: In private communication, Ray revealed that he was seeing some white precipitate form when dissolving pure tin in pure nitric acid.

A. That white material sounds like metastannic acid on eBay or Amazon [affil link] .

HCl is a much better solvent for Sn because it is nonoxidizing.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
