Low alkali enzymatic degreasing chemicals

May 25, 2013

Q. Usually Alkaline type cleaners are being used for Galvanized and Galvalume Steel Mills. Is there possibility of using low alkali Enzymatic type of cleaners?

A. Hi Prashant. Interesting question! Certainly enzymes are used in wastewater treatment, and in cleaning proteinacious materials from medical instruments. In general cleaning of metal as part of a metal finishing operation, though, the issues might be different.

For example: Would enzymatic cleaners do the whole job (probably not). Is there enough proteinacious soil for the enzyme cleaning to be worthwhile considering the time and space for the extra step? Might the enzymatic cleaning interfere with other cleaning? Can the enzymes be combined into strong alkaline cleaner formulations? Maybe they already are, but I haven't heard of it, so I too would like to hear from a formulator of metal finishing cleaners.
