Is any post-dip required after TiN coating?
May 31, 2011
Dear Sir,
I am Raju from Bangalore city. I wanted to do TiN coating . I know it requires an under coat of nickel for brass watch cases. My question is whether any dip is required after TiN coating?
What will happen to TiN coating if exposed to air for a few days .
What is the hardness of TiN coating with thickness?
I am an electro plater; I wanted to know more about PVD as
I want to set up a plant.
Best regards,
Raju

TiN is a hard (~ 2500 HV) yellow coating and nothing much happens to it when exposed to air. Though it looks like gold it does not have the same luster. The same achieved by depositing a thin layer (<1 micron) of gold. This is done in the same coating chamber without breaking vacuum. I do not know if any one has succeeded in electroplating gold on TiN. That would be interesting.
PVD coating of TiN on electroplated brass has problems of adhesion. It could be either due to internal stresses or brighteners used in Ni plating or both. It is said that a palladium layer would help. I wonder if this is a trade secret.
