S Sculpture project using "natural" rust stains

January 27, 2011

Hello,

I'm currently working on a sculpture project with plaster. I'm thinking about making one part stained with rust stains from some sort of iron object. I've seen the insta-rust stuff but think there must be a way to cause the effect more naturally over a long period. I though about say making a pump to create a continuous flow of water over some iron (or steel) objects (nails, bits of metal, what have you) and have drip over the top of the sculpture. Would this work? If so would it eventually over time run down and stain the entire (or a larger portion) of the sculpture? I know this isn't a metal finishing question per say, however, it does deal with the effects and aftermath of a metal finish and stains caused by that effect. I figured you guys might have seen something similar in action.

Thanks.

Josh
