Graham's / Durney's Electroplating Engineering Handbook
Q. I'm researching electropolishing and have been looking for Graham's Electroplating Engineering Handbook 1984 edition by L.J.Durney. The 2 1/2" thick '84 edition goes for $300+ used, but the 1 1/2" thick "International" '84 edition goes for $30 new.
So here's my question: Anybody know just what has been taken out with that inch? If you've got the "International", are the chapters on electropolishing (ch. 3D) and rectifiers (ch. 30) still there?
Thanks,
Joe
P.S. I can post the ISBN's if you like, but didn't want to make a boring post boring-er.

Hi, Joe. I hadn't previously heard of this "International Version" and would not be bored to hear more about it. But I've recently sold two of my own extra personal copies for $60 each, so they're not always "$300+ used" :-)

$$$ '84 edition ISBN: 9780412741104.
If you can verify that this other version is just as good I'd appreciate it!

Hi, Joe. Actually, the ISBN number is the same -- it just that one of them is written in the old 10-digit format and one in the new 13-digit format (a prefix of 978 is added in front of older numbers). The last digit is different because it's a "check-sum digit" that calculates differently in the two systems.
Apparently no readers yet are familiar with this "international" version. I see claims that it's word for word, and it may be. Presumably it's xerox-like copies. I have a hardcover copy of such a "re-do", of Brenner's Electrodeposition of Alloys, sold by NASF, and I hate its many washed out pages, some pages bound in the wrong order, etc. It's all there if necessary, but it's no pleasure to work with. But had I only paid $30 for it instead of full price, I'd probably feel quite differently :-)
You need to be careful that you actually receive the item if you aren't familiar with the seller; and I wouldn't know whether the organization offering it is legitimate or if Durney's estate is still entitled to royalties but is being ripped off. I just don't know. Good luck.

The Electroplating Engineering Handbook -- Inexpensive Version
If you don't join the fight, our days are numbered.
I have owned a 3rd edition of this book (which is essentially worn out) since it was first published in 1971. Like probably many other people, I have wanted a 4th edition but balked at spending the $200-$760 necessary to obtain one.
If you click on the Books tab at the top of the page and then click on Electroplating Engineers Handbook, you will read that Ted has added some information concerning a much less expensive paperback version of the Durney 4th edition being available from India. The Indian edition sells for about $14 to $29.
I just received a copy from Abebooks
. I paid about $27 with free shipping from a 5 star Indian seller and received it in less than a week. The book was brand new, in English, complete, and was as advertised. There were some minor imperfections in the printing of the book. I haven't had time to look it over completely, but I noticed that one chapter was fairly faint, a couple of pages were slightly folded over, and the text on a few pages was slightly crooked. However, it was all there and all readable. In my opinion, an excellent buy for one of the top must-have plating books.
Inside the book, it says, "Reprinted in India by CBS Publishers and Distributors in arrangement with Van Nostrand Reinhold Company USA." Also, some of the top booksellers in the US are selling it. I therefore assume it's a legal edition and is not pirated.

A. Hello Wanida. We've attached your inquiry to a thread about the book's availability through Amazon or Abebooks. And you can view the Table of Contents here at finishing.com. I presume that you can buy the book from those sources, but unfortunately I don't really know since different countries might have some vagaries in their customs or import procedures.
