Micro deburring and surface refinement of small HSS metal cutting tools

January 13, 2011

I'm looking for electropolishing & alternatives, for the micro deburring and surface refinement of HSS metal cutting tools (burnishing could also be of interest i.e. pre or post heat treatment).

My dilemma/requirement is that the cutting edge tool is only 0.6 mm wide (0.023 inches).

Please recommend methods/processes/services for consideration.

Nicholas,

I'm no expert, but this sounds like an ideal application for thermal deburring. If you google it you will find plenty of information on the subject.

We have successfully deburred and polished parts in a vibratory deburring machine using dry organic abrasive media many times.

While micro deburring may sound good, however small burrs will not be eliminated from the surface, making the cutting surface less hydrophilic. On the other hand electropolishing not only remove burrs, but in the special regimes can sharpen the cutting tools. The high-carbon stainless steel alloy can be perfectly electropolished and sharpened. See pictures attached.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
