Losing cylindricality by anodizing, and burnishing doesn't fix it

December 22, 2010

Dear Gentlemen / experts,

Now I am working for one of Automotive components which has cylindricality requirement of 10 microns after anodising process in D7.5 inner bore with 5 lands of interrupt cuts (40 mm overall length).

We did Roller burnishing process after anodising in CNC which gives us 12 microns best of result is not acceptable.

Could any one kindly give me some suggestion to improve it?

Before anodising cylindricality - 6 mic

after anodising - 22 mic

after burnishing - 12 mic (Stock for burnishing 15 mic)

Thanks in advance.

That is a really tough set of standards to meet.
I would take a look at the racking for the anodizing to see if I could improve the uniformity of the anodize.
You might have to consider adding a fine honing step before the burnishing.
Is the roller as large as it can be?
