Suitable Heat Treatment (case or through hardening) for consistent torquing

December 13, 2010

Hi all,

At present we are doing through hardening (quenching & tempering) of C40 material to get the Hardness of 330-380HV30. the part has to withstand the torque of min 5.1N. We are not getting consistency in the Torque measurement.

I am planning to do the case hardening with low carbon steel to withstand the Torque value. Is it advisable to do the Case hardening for withstanding Torque.

If case hardening is good, can anyone suggest the raw material, surface hardness, case depth, core hardness to withstand the Torque Value.
