Annealing needed after SS 316 shaft welding (LOX fluid)?

January 8, 2010

I have a problem about ss316 shaft welding because this shaft is eroded from bearing contact location (approximately 3 cm in pump shaft length).
If we do welding (change microstructure?), must we do Annealing heat treatment? Fluid is LOX with -180 Centigrade Degree( liquid oxygen )
What is procedure?

Dear Soli,

You should not heat treat your shaft after welding (you risk to loose some of the strength by heat treatment).
But you should passivate or electropolish after welding and grinding to the correct diameter.
This passivation is necessary to restore the original corrosion resistance.

Kind regards,

Marc.

Thermospray, tank and brush plating processes are other very good options for low temperature dimensional restoration that do not compromise the internal metallurgy and stability of critical components. They can even be tailored to improve corrosion resistance.
