Alternative plating process for Chrome on ZAMAK metal

January 5, 2010

I am working as a design engineer in an electronic door lock manufacturer. The outer trims(covers) of the lock are made up of ZAMAK(Zn Alloy) diecasting and then for better corrosion resistance Satin Chrome plating has been done. But we found out that this process is expensive and almost more than the component cost. Also I am not looking at changing the base metal to Stainless steel as this will ask for a process change as well. Since this is being manufactured in very high volume diecasting the ZAMAK is a cost-effective process. Also stainless steel stamping has been discarded as we do not want to change the look of the covers very much (slight change is acceptable).

Can you guys suggest me some alternate low cost plating method to address the corrosion/wear resistivity without Chrome plating.
