Refining gold in electronics by leaving it behind and dissolving the copper

I have a large amount of gold plated electrical contacts....I'm trying to decide whether to just use my nitric to dissolve the copper, or use an aqua regia solution to dissolve the gold and try to recover it that way...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, have watched MANY postings on this site, all have varied greatly...have never seen one on dissolving the base metal and leaving the values !
