Suitable steel plating for high temperature and high humidity environment

December 16, 2009

Our testing jig is used to carry out testing in high temperature & high humidity environment.

The jig is make of steel (SS400) and with Electroless Nickel Plating. After 1 month, some parts are found rusty, especially in those screw joint or mating areas.

My questions,
1) Is Electroless plating suitable in this situation? If not, what is the best?
2) We intend to send all parts for re-coating, is Nickel chrome suitable?

Thank you.

Hi, Leon. You didn't mention how hot the test jig gets, but either electroless nickel or nickel-chrome should be fine. Since you are already using electroless nickel, that would seem the simpler choice. The plating is most likely just not thick enough. 0.001" sounds like a good number; what do you have?
