Does this analysis mean real 316 stainless?

December 10, 2009

I tested a ss316 casted piece, the result is mo 2.15 ni9.88 cr19 c 0.07, si 0.91, mn 0.51 p 0.029 s 0.008
as a bit rust found on surface, can it called as 316

My book of alloys (an internet search can get you this info too) says 316 is
C 0.08 max
Cr 16.00-18.00
Mn 2.00 max
Mo 2.00-3.00
Ni 10.00-14.00
P 0.045 max
S 0.030 max
Si 1.00 max

So your Ni is a hair low but it otherwise looks okay. Surface rust doesn't necessarily mean the alloy composition isn't up to spec, it could be due to surface contamination from another iron source, or exposure to high levels of chloride.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
