For analysis of HCl % in Acetyl Chloride

December 2, 2009

I have a problem how to analysis hyidrochloric acid in Acetyl chloride
Can I analyse it with titration method or clorimetric method or any other method

Could you tell me about the right analysis methods for my problem?

Thanks alot,

Add a weighed sample of acetyl chloride to water, slowly and at a low temperature.

Dilute this solution up to a suitable volume and split it in two, precisely.

Subject one aliquot to steam distillation (there's a procedure in Standard Methods) to recover the acetic acid [on eBay or Amazon] and subject both the undistilled hydrolysate and the distillate to acid base titration.

Subtract the second answer from the first answer to get the acidity due to free HCl in the original acetyl chloride.

Respected Dave Wichern,
I analyze acetyl chloride sample according to your method but it is not possible to recover acetic acid totally because some fraction of acetic acid is goes with distillate. Please Suggest me how I recover acetic acid or give me another instrumental or non-instrumental method to check free HCl% in Acetyl Chloride
