Toxicity of nickel plating food container/product

Q. Hi,

This is Vicky, we are developing food-contact products/food container for our US customers.

One of our options is to produce the product with copper and make it nickel plated on the surface. However, our customer is concerned about the toxicity of this kind of material.

Is there any safety issue/concern for copper material that is electroplated with nickel?

Kindly comment, thanks in advance.
Vicky ;-)

A. Hi, Vivki. Many items designed for casual contact with food are nickel plated: oven racks, cake knives, corkscrews, can openers, spatulas, etc. But when you are speaking of a container, I'd be much less enthusiastic. How about tin plating, since this is a centuries-old process for copper, and is completely food safe?

A. Hi Manish. When the proposition is posted in abstract fashion like that, I'd say the answer is no.
