Electrochemical polishing of titanium

November 16, 2009

Hi

I am interested in coloring titanium as a hobby, I have alot of questions with very little resources here in Cairo, Egypt.
What alkaline shall I use for type II anodizing of Titanium to get a uniform color ?
Is room temperature ok for anodizing Titanium ?
I would like to know if a highly polished surface will affect the color ?
Can I do polishing by Electrochemical methods ? will it be expensive?
Thank you for your patience

Forget electrochemical polishing -- too complicated and dangerous for DIY work. Any electrolyte can be used for colour anodizing of titanium, even Coca Cola, according to some sources. Room temperature is OK. Try reactivemetals.com website there you can find many useful infos on colouring of titanium and niobium. You must use rubber gloves (high voltage -for some colors up to 110 V DC must be used)! You can heat tint titanium too. Hope it helps and good luck!
