-----Is cadmium plating resistant to H2S?
At my firm we produce switchgear that goes into a variety of environments and can be exposed to many different elements that can cause corrosion. Are cadmium plated bolts resistant to corrosion from H2S?

Relative to some other platings, the answer is NO. CdS is an ugly smut black.

Second of two simultaneous responses --
Sulfur gasses react with cadmium to form a cadmium sulfide film. Colors are from orange to black, depending on other corrosive gasses in the atmosphere with the sulfur. There is some corrosion, but corrosion to the basis metal is slow. The rate is dependent whether or not there is an acid environment along with the sulfur.
