Alternative to zinc electroplating for disposable gas cartridges

We currently use gas cartridges with a finishing with zinc electroplating.
Those cartridges are disposable, with a shelf life of less than one year.
Is there alternative to protect the steel from the corrosion with a cheaper solution ( coating ?...)

Hi, Jean-Luc. Zinc is the least expensive metallic finish, but there's always black oxide, or paint over iron phosphate.
