Hard chrome plating problems: porosity and breaking / fracturing

Q. I am a metallurgist in a engineering company.

We are doing hard chrome plating of our components, and we are facing problems like porous hardchrome structure, and low hardness.

After hard chrome chrome plating, we are testing the component for breaking load and we found lower against the specification. but without hard chrome plating we can get the specified breaking load.

Pl. reply.

A. Hi, Devarajan. Do you properly bake the parts for hydrogen de-embrittlement immediately after plating? Please tell us your baking situation and the hardness (Rc rating) of the substrate because hardened steel must be baked.

Regarding the porosity problem in hard chrome plating, we have about a dozen detailed discussions on line here. Please use the search engine to check them, and if the previous answers do not get you to a solution, please post details of your components and your processing. Thanks and good luck.
