What kind of coating increases OD and is abrasion resistant

increases O.D. and is highly resistant to abrasion?
thanks for your time.

Hi, Craig. Please try to describe your situation rather than posting in abstract terms. Virtually any plating will increase the OD. Nickel plating or hard chrome plating are probably the most common procedures for building up worn ODs.

I have a piston and cylinder with excess play.
I am looking to increase the o.d. of the piston by .004" or .005".
the coating must be wear resistant.
I am currently fabricating shims of polycarbonate and fastening them with Loctite 380 glue and 770 primer, which is working but is time consuming.

I would use Electroless nickel and plate only the piston. A good plater can come fairly close to the required dimension and you can buff a tiny bit of it off if it is minorly too big. Otherwise, it is a grind operation. I would not use chrome at anything less than 0.003 per side and it will require grinding.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
