Stripping of PVD plated gold

July 15, 2009

We do Gold plating through PVD process with titanium nitride on PNP and Ni under coat on brass. We use cyanide base stripper for stripping 0.1 micron of PVD plated gold layer. Any other method is there for stripping gold without cyanide ?

Pl give your views.

Hello Subramanyam
PVD gold coating can be stripped by aqua regia (3HCL+1 HNO3) .If the solution can be heated up to 100 °C it will more effective.

Be careful with an aqua regia dip. The Nitric acid (HNO3) in there will try and attack the copper as well as the gold.
Another gold etchant is a solution of potassium iodide (115g), iodine (65g), and water(100mL). This will attack the gold extremely rapidly so you may want to try 5 second intervals or diluting it. Play around with it and you'll be able to optimize it for your process.
