Estimation of Zinc Chloride in Zinc Flux

June 23, 2009

Dear Sirs,
We are manufacturers of Zinc Chloride flux and provide this to galvanising industries. We are faced with the problems of material rejection. So please suggest any efficient method to determine Zinc or Zinc Chloride in Zinc Flux or any other way to measure the quality of Zinc flux to avoid rejection.
Is there any way to do the above in simple way or can be done by non technical workers like by use of any handheld instrument
Please suggest

Sir:
The density of a zinc chloride solution gives accurately the zinc chloride content (assuming there are no other materials dissolved). The Chemistry/Physics Handbook has such a table.
For quadraflux (ACN=1.6) the formula:
ZnCl2 in g/L=4.2*baumé^1.22 gives a very good result within +-2%. I have experimentally determined the densities versus the concentrations of mono, double, triple, quadraflux, and pentaflux but never published the results.
(*means multiply and ^means raised to the power)
