Harsh weather resistance zinc plating vs. hot dip galvanizing
Our company has the ability to silver plating and would like to expand our capabilities
to a electroplating process. After a discussion with our engineering department I was
told that I would need to find a electroplating process that was as durable as the
hot dip galvanizing process that we currently send parts out for. There biggest concern
was weathering on a electroplated piece that will be in many different climates.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Scott. Hot dip galvanizing is a good 10 times as thick as zinc electroplating, and consequently delivers far more protection. You could try an alloy zinc plating, such as zinc nickel or tin-zinc, but it will still be 1/10th as thick and I personally don't think it will prove equivalent. Best bets for in-house processing might be mechanical galvanizing/mechanical plating or thermal diffusion coating.
