Stripping chrome

(2000)

I have a decorative chrome-plated panel that has over the years accumulated some fine scratches on the chrome surface. The underlying nickel still looks very good however, so I would like to strip just the chrome, leaving the nickel and rechroming the panel.

My question is how can I strip the chrome without harming the nickel surface at all.

Is the use of 1 part HCl to 2 parts water a good idea? Kik

Chromium is attacked by strong alkalies, nickel is not. The best bet would be to boil the part in strong hydroxide solution, but unless you are familiar with the inherent dangers of such a process, you might want to let a chrome plater handle the job. Also, the professional will have the means to safely dispose of the chromium waste--not something you want to flush down the toilet. By the way, the HCl solution will attack the chromium and the nickel.
