This isn't the answer you were looking for, but weren't the techs at Sherwin Williams any help to you? They are manufacturers and you are already using their products.

Matching a basecoat/texture process is nearly imposible with a self texture paint. Please realize that obtaining a consistent texture is more of an art than a science. If the texture size is very small, you maybe able to get away with a self texture.

Polane paint has been around for many years and is one of the most forgiving paints available. It sprays nice and is very easy to setup textures. I sprayed Polane myself for many years on office and computer equipment with great success. I question what your difficulty is when attempting to texture with Polane. When I setup my texture patterns, I would use a texture chip that I had previously sprayed so I knew what size and hight texture to spray when I did the job again. Can you give us more to go on?

I have dealt with many textured paints applied to various metal substrates. Virually every major paint company sells them. Some contain a texturing material, others the chemistry within the paint gives the texture (crystal kote).
