Acid vs alkali zinc plating - which is more prone to hydrogen embtrittlement

2007

I am in charge of plating shop I'm my company which manufactures high tensile fasteners.
So far no one has clearly answered my doubt, which process introduces more Hydrogen during plating - acisd zinc or alkali zinc.
With available technical literature I am of the view that in acisd it is lesser than alkali because of the fact that in acis zinc plating the cathode efficiency is 95 % as compared to alkali which is 75 %/.

Dear Mr Shridhar,

You are dead right in your assumption. Chloride based baths do not embrittle as badly as Alkaline baths.

don't forget that your pickling step is common for both types of baths, and will also induce embrittlement!
