HARD CHROME PLATING OF ROLLING DIES

We do hard chromium plating on roll dies used in the manufacture of automobile rims. A common failure problem in them is that the layer chips off at certain points on the periphery during use resulting in expensive line stoppage. We etch the highly polished dies in chromic acid itself. Can somebody suggest better etching techniques or pretreatment for this application.

If you are still interested in an answer to your etching question, please let me know. I have a sulfuric etch formula we've use for many years. As I try to recall I think it came from a book by Greenwood. I'll check it out if still interested.
