Carbon steel in contact with stainless steel

Do you know if there is galvanic action between stainless steel and carbon steel? What precautions should be taken? Specific welding electrodes?

Ronald Morgan
Architect - Norfolk, Virginia, USA
2007

Yes, there can be galvanic corrosion of the carbon steel. After welding, apply corrosion protection such as paint. If using galvanized steel, the area to be welded must be scrupulously precleaned of zinc to avoid contamination & embrittlement of the stainless.

The specific welding electrode should be based upon the specific alloys being joined, along with any application requirements. Visit a welding supplier (Avesta, Harris Products, Lincoln Electric, etc.) site to determine a suitable electrode alloy. E.g., to join 304 SS to 1028 mild steel, 309L filler is commonly used.

For structural applications, consult a welding firm as to the applicability of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code - Steel.
