Door knobs in brass - Dissolving Lacquer Finish?

What would be the best way to dissolve the worn out lacquer finish so repolish and recoating is possible? Tried a paint stripper w/o desired results.

You have to know what the clear coat is to use a proper remover. some times it is just simpler to replace them with new ones.

If the coating on your knobs were simple lacquer, then lacquer thinner [on eBay or Amazon] would take it off easily. More likely it's a much tougher finish like polyurethane. Strippers will work, but they may be slow and will require rubber gloves [on eBay or Amazon] and stiff brushing.

If the knobs are inexpensive ones, you might buy new for the cost of stripper and new clear coat. Also if you clear coat with ordinary lacquer, it will not last very long.
