What chemicals harm Nickel Chrome Plating on Plastics




Q. Sir,
I would like to know the list of chemicals that are detrimental to the chrome & nickel layer on plated plastic parts.

A. As the old saying goes, "everything is relative", Subramanyam. Even simple dusts and dirts increase the corrosion rate. Regular washing of a car is important for corrosion prevention. But hydrochloric acid is probably the most deleterious chemical because it will completely dissolve the chrome in seconds. Chrome is amphoteric and can be dissolved by strong alkali as well as by acid.
