Testing Specimens for Barrel Plating

2007

I am the Quality Manager for a Metal Finishing Job Shop located in southern California.

I am having issues with specification requirements for testing specimens as they relate to bend adhesion testing. I run small quantities of parts and have difficulty in using the specification required 1x4x.040 testing coupons. The coupons have very different properties than those of the parts.

Since most specifications do not directly address the issue of rack plating can I reduce the size of my adhesion testing coupons from 1x4 to 1x.5 to make them more representative of the plated parts.

How will this affect me during any Nadcap Audit?

Nadcap is a comparison against the customer specification.
If the spec requires a bend test which is inappropriate for the parts, I suggest that you ask the Prime customer for a concession. You may be able to substitute another test.
