Want controlled rusted finish like plasma cut edge

I am an industrial technology instructor. Some of my students who are looking to achieve the same rusted finish often seen on a variety of plasma cut sculptures. The result is thin, yet evenly oxidized patina on the surface, contrasted with the plasma cut edges. Does anyone have any suggestions how this can be replicated?
