Distressing/darkening/aging the brass on a barstool

I am refinishing some wooden bar stools that have brass footrests around the bottom. I want to either paint the brass or tarnish it so that it looks distressed, not shiny new, as I am going to distress the wood and want the two materials to coordinate. what should I do/use and how difficult is it to do?
