Dirty substrate causes poor adhesion?

We are on a reel-reel plating with gold finish. We always encountered poor adhesion problem on the nickel plating process. Our first perception on the problem was on the substrate. Either, it is dirty, rusty, have uneven surface and the like. Is it possible that a substrate that is dirty or rusty can cause poor adhesion? Our cleaning solution also is 5 days before renewal.

Duh, yes. It is a truism that 90 percent of adhesion problems result from poor cleaning, Jharlen. The strip must present a waterbreak-free appearance before plating. Don't even waste your time trying to plate a strip that is "dirty or rusty".
