Staining stainless steel

I am a garden railroader hobbyist who used stainless steel track in my back yard . Is there some way to stain stainless steel black or a dark brown color?

First of two simultaneous responses --

Robert, simply use diluted muriatic acid [affil links] (pool acid) and brush on. Be sure to neutralize with baking soda [on eBay or Amazon] when color achieved. All Aboard!

Second of two simultaneous responses --

Oil it very, very sparingly, then heat it to 300-400 C(with hot air gun).Any edible oil or fat can be used- linseed oil [affil links] is best. Hope it helps and good luck!
