How to dull a chrome finish

I have a chrome oil tank on my motorcycle and want it dull. Can I just sand it?

Hi Chuck. No, the chrome is much too thin. You will scratch through rather than roughen it. If you remove the chrome with muriatic acid ⇦ on eBay or Amazon [affil link] (following label instructions, wearing full personnel protective equipment, and doing it where the fumes won't attack other metal), you can leave the underlying nickel which will tarnish to a warmer slightly yellowish color.
