Electrolyte for aluminum electroplating

2006

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am a Ph.D. student in physics in Taiwan. I am studying optical properties of metal nano-particles especially plasmonics. For that study I need to prepare a silver film coated with aluminum. So I think, I can use silver sample as an electrode to electroplate aluminum on it. Could you tell me what solution I should use as electrolyte for this purpose and any helpful information related to this?

It is impossible to electroplate aluminum out of a conventional (aqueous) plating bath. You would need to do it from a fused salt bath or an organic solvent in an oxygen-free environment. It may be more practical to vacuum metallize the items.
