I want to paint a pole barn that is covered in galvanized steel

-----

I would like to paint the galvanized steel that is on the side of my pole shed. I am seeking info on paint that would adhere to this finish, I am seeking a white semi-gloss finish.

Regarding the painting of any galvanized surface, I've always washed the surface with vinegar in bulk on eBay or Amazon [affil links] , let dry, then primer the metal for whatever type paint you'd like to use. The vinegar is a mild corrosive which will remove the inhibitor coating in order for the primer paint, then paint to adhere. Hope this helps.

Many specialty primers have formulated their coatings for galvanized metals. XIM on eBay or Amazon [affil links] has some great adhesion primers both in latex and solvent base. (we like solvent based because the bond is quicker for handling and assembly) Automotive paint companies also sell metal treatments or washes that work well with most primers. Don't skimp on prep. removing half stuck peeling paint in no fun!

Galvanized sheeting if sold unpainted is passivated to make it less reactive to the environment. This must be removed before painting (not an easy task). Next it must be treated to allow paint to adhere. The best treatment is zinc phosphate but there are others. Good luck.
