There are numerous test methods, depending on the plating that you are applying, the substrate, and what concerns you. There are corrosion tests, adhesion tests, and many more.

Hello, Roy. I'm not trying to run you in circles, but the thing is: it's the designer who has to specify what he wants and what's important to him. You have to decide on required corrosion resistance, required minimum thickness, whether you want clear or yellow chromate from an appearance standpoint, etc. It might be good to start with a copy of ASTM B633; this in turn will reference test specifications and will give you a starting point.

Zinc plating almost always requires and receives a chromate conversion coating, and traditionally this involved hexavalent chromium, which is now forbidden by European WEEE and RoHS standards. So you'll also need to decide whether the item needs to pass these standards. I think you should plan that way regardless, which will essentially mean that you'll need to specify that the chromating process must be trivalent, and the parts must comply with WEEE and RoHS standards. Good luck.
